Convert the ongoing temporary ceasefire into a permanent one

Leaders from Kurram and Paktia have called upon the governments of Pakistan and the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan to convert the ongoing temporary ceasefire into a permanent one.

In a statement to Radio Mashal on March 23, they noted that the recent ceasefire has significantly contributed to the restoration of normal life for people residing on both sides of the Durand Line. A prominent leader from Paktia, Haji Layeq, urged both governments to cease hostilities, stressing that continued conflict is not a viable solution and advocating for the use of diplomatic channels to address the issue. Similarly, Malik Aun Ali of Kurram stated that the ceasefire has brought great relief and happiness to the local population. He further added that many displaced families have returned to their native villages to celebrate Eid.

  1. Unidentified gunmen killed three members of a family and injured three others in South Waziristan.

South Waziristan Police Chief, Muhammad Tahir Shah, told Radio Mashal on March 24 that both the deceased and the injured were members of Malik Sardar Ali’s family.

He further stated that the incident occurred in the Azam Warsak area a day earlier, and that the police have launched an investigation into the attack.

Ikram Katana told Radio Mashal on the same day that residents in 285 locations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were encouraged to obtain free saplings from nearby nurseries and plant them in their respective areas.

Residents of Zhob and Sherani, predominantly Pashtun areas of Balochistan, convened a jirga on November 23 and 24 to deliberate on the protection of their forests and wildlife. Participants informed Radio Mashal that the community has collectively resolved to preserve these natural resources and refrain from hunting, in accordance with the traditional practice known as “Pargor.” The regions of Zhob and Sherani are endowed with extensive forests of olive and walnut trees, which also serve as habitats for a diverse range of birds and wildlife.

In Orakzai, a military operation against militants in 2010 compelled local residents to abandon their homes and seek refuge in other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A large number of displaced families were accommodated in the Muhammad Khwaja Camp in Hangu.Following the conclusion of the operation in 2015, the government allowed the displaced persons to return to their native areas. However, a considerable number of families continue to reside in the Muhammad Khwaja Camp. These individuals have been demanding compensation and financial assistance from the government for their damaged and destroyed homes. The elected representative of Orakzai in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly stated that he has taken up the matter with the Chief Minister, particularly regarding those who have not yet received compensation, and expressed optimism that the concerns of the displaced families will be resolved in the near future.

An administrative official, who spoke to Radio Mashal on March 27 on condition of anonymity, stated that the crossing had been opened a day earlier to allow Afghans stranded at Torkham and surrounding areas to return to their country

Two Frontier Corps (FC) soldiers were killed in a militant attack in Dara Adam Khel, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while three civilians were injured in a separate attack in Bajaur. A Quetta police official, speaking to Radio Mashal on condition of anonymity, stated that on March 28, the two FC soldiers were traveling to a security checkpoint when they were ambushed by militants and shot dead on the spot.

  1. Militants have killed a police officer and three others injured in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

According to a statement by the Bannu police, the incident took place on March 28 in the Hudayd area. The police added that two suspected militants were killed during a retaliatory operation. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack, nor have they responded to the police statement.

Over the past four years, insecurity has increased in various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, with militants periodically targeting police personnel, soldiers, government officials, politicians, religious scholars, businessmen, community leaders, former militants, opposition figures, and activists.

  1. At least 17 people have been killed and 56 others injured in separate incidents across several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a result of torrential rains.

Anwar Shahzad, spokesperson for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), told Radio Mashal on March 30 that the incidents occurred in Bannu, Kohat, North Waziristan, Bajaur, Lower Dir, and Abbottabad.He stated that 14 of the deceased were children, while 26 children were among the injured. According to Shahzad, Bannu was the worst-affected district, where eight people lost their lives and 42 others were injured due to the heavy rainfall.
