The closure of roads and the suspension of trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan and financial losses

For more than four months, the closure of roads and the suspension of trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan have resulted in substantial financial losses for farmers in Punjab. Farmers report that the price of potatoes has fallen drastically, to the extent that they are unable to recover even the basic cost of cultivation.

After clashes between Pakistani forces and the Taliban government’s troops in Afghanistan in October 2025, several major routes between the two countries — including Torkham and Chaman — have remained closed to trade and the movement of people since the 12th of that month. Officials from both sides later engaged in negotiations, mediated by Qatar and Turkey; however, the talks concluded without any agreement.
