CRPD Mourns the Loss of a Tireless Pashtun Voice for Peace and Democracy: Maulana Khan Zeb

July 12, 2025

It is with deep sorrow and a sense of loss that the Centre for Regional Policy & Dialogue (CRPD) mourns the tragic killing of Maulana Khan Zeb on July 10, 2025.

Maulana Khan Zeb was a distinguished leader, a member of the Central Cabinet and Secretary of Ulama of the Awami National Party (ANP). A committed Pashtun nationalist and former candidate for the National Assembly of Pakistan, he was far more than a political figure. He was a firm voice for peace, tolerance, federalism, diversity, and democracy, not just for the Pashtun community but for all oppressed ethno-national identities and marginalized individuals across Pakistan and the region.

His ability to connect with people at the grassroots made him distinguish. Maulana Khan Zeb was not just a politician; he was a movement and hope of change. He believed in political education, community mobilization, and non-violent resistance as tools for change. Through study circles, he encouraged communities against extremism, radicalization, and human rights violations. These gatherings became platforms for advocating for the people’s right to govern, to participate in the political process, and to build an inclusive society.

CRPD was honored to have had his consistent support over the years. Maulana Khan Zeb was not only a regular participant in our activities in Bajaur, but also one of our strongest allies. Whether as a host or a campaigner, he stood with us in our collective struggle for peace, justice, and democratic values. His commitment to these causes will always be remembered and admired.

Beyond his grassroot level activism, Maulana Khan Zeb was also among those in the party ranks who led protests, peace walks, sit-ins, and public campaigns advocating for rights, peace  and dignity. His intellectual contributions include two books, reflecting his commitment to ideological clarity, progressive politics and know about people and land of Pashtunkhwa.

In his martyrdom, we have lost a guiding light, a man who never compromised on his principles and who paid the ultimate price for standing up for what is right. The void left by Maulana Khan Zeb’s untimely departure is vast, and his absence will be felt for generations to come.

CRPD extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the wider community. We stand in solidarity with all those who carry forward his legacy.
